A car that doesn't exist yet sold for a record $20.63 million (6 photos)

The first of the planned supercars from Gordon Murray Special Vehicles, the S1 LM, went under the hammer last weekend at the Las Vegas Grand Prix. At the auction, organized by RM Sotheby's, the coupe fetched $20,630,000. Gordon Murray's company claimed this was the highest price ever paid for a new car at public auction, excluding charity auctions.





The demonstration car arrived at the Wynn Hotel, where the auction was held, on a platform suspended from a helicopter. Thus, the supercar flew several hundred meters above the main landmarks of Las Vegas.

Famous engineer Gordon Murray calls the S1 LM the embodiment of all the knowledge and experience he's gained over six decades of automobile development. However, the production car has yet to be built. For the price of the supercar, its future owner will receive personalized car customization sessions with Gordon Murray, participate in testing with Gordon Murray Group CEO and three-time Indy 500 champion Dario Franchitti, and will also have the opportunity to observe the final stages of development.

Developed by Gordon Murray's special vehicles division, the S1 LM is considered a new incarnation of the iconic McLaren F1 GTR, and as such, it features a number of nods to the original in its exterior and interior design. The carbon fiber supercar will be powered by a 4.3-liter naturally aspirated V12 producing over 700 horsepower.
