A unique 1952 Chrysler Styling Special coupe will be put up for auction (18 photos)
In mid-August, Sotheby's will auction off an unusual Chrysler coupe built in 1952 with the participation of the Ghia coachbuilder. This is a one-of-a-kind Styling Special show car, designed by the famous designer Virgil Exner. The auction house's experts believe that the car could fetch up to $650,000.
Styling Special (SS) was the third joint project of Chrysler, Exner and Ghia, in which the alliance experimented with the design of American models, adding European motifs to them. Based on the Chrysler SS, a small batch of road cars with the GS-1 index was released, but the very first example is up for sale - a show car that Chrysler demonstrated at the 1952 Paris Motor Show.
The car is based on the standard Chrysler New Yorker chassis, the wheelbase of which was shortened to about three meters to optimize the external proportions. The overall length of the coupe exceeds 5.4 meters. At the same time, despite its large dimensions, the car has only one row of seats - a sofa designed for three passengers.
It is generally accepted that all joint works of the early 1950s, the Chrysler and Ghia alliance equipped with the same engine - a 180-horsepower V8 with a volume of 5.42 liters. However, the first Styling Special is now equipped with an alternative power unit, which it received in 1955. In addition, over the past time the car has been repainted several times.
