When people talk about squid, they usually mean the ordinary, unremarkable reef squid, but the unusual phenomenon begins to manifest itself at depths of 200 meters.
The twilight zone (200–1000 meters) contains several not-so-scary, but rather beautiful squid, such as the sparkling squid, the transparent squid, and the Humboldt squid (up to 1.8 meters in size).
The midnight zone begins at approximately 1000 meters and extends to 4000 meters. Its representatives include *Promachoteuthis sulcus*—the squid with teeth—and the giant squid (up to 14 meters in size).
The abyssal zone begins at a depth of 4,000 meters and reaches 6,000 meters. Asperoteuthis (the narrowest squid) and colossal squids.
The hadal zone is the deepest part of the ocean, from 6,000 meters to 11,000 meters (the lowest point of the Mariana Trench), and is home to the most fearsome squid, *Magnapinna*. Science doesn't even know what it does, but it is known to reach sizes starting at 6 meters.
