Area 51: Myth, Mystery, and Reality of the World's Most Mysterious Base (10 photos)

Today, 01:39

Perhaps no other place on Earth is surrounded by so many rumors as Area 51—a military base hidden in the barren expanses of the Nevada desert.

For decades, it has captivated the public imagination, fueling theories about secret experiments, classified technologies, and even alien contact.

But what really lies behind these barbed wire fences and mountains of sand?

Area 51 exists—and that's a fact.

Contrary to skepticism, Area 51 is not a myth. It's a real US Air Force test site, officially called the Nevada Test and Training Range.

Initially, to attract specialists to this remote location, Lockheed engineers came up with a friendlier name for it—"Paradise Ranch." It later became one of the most secret places on the planet.

Where is Area 51?

The base is located approximately 200 kilometers northwest of Las Vegas, in the middle of a rocky desert where the sun blazes during the day and the temperature drops sharply at night.

The nearby towns of Rachel and Hiko look like sets from a Wild West movie, which only adds to the feeling of isolation.

The test site covers over 3,500 square miles, making it ideal for concealing anything from aircraft prototypes to secret experiments.

How it all began

The history of Area 51 begins in 1955, at the height of the Cold War.

The United States needed a place to secretly test reconnaissance aircraft—primarily the famous U-2, created by Lockheed for spy missions over Soviet territory.

The choice fell on the arid Groom Lake Valley, far from prying eyes and radar. There, an era of experimentation began that soon became steeped in myths and legends.

Tests that gave birth to legends

Over the years, the most advanced aircraft of their time were tested here:

The A-12 Oxcart, the predecessor of the famous SR-71 Blackbird, which reached speeds in excess of Mach 3;

The F-117 Nighthawk – the world's first stealth fighter, capable of evading radar thanks to Stealth technology;

as well as other prototypes that resembled ships from science fiction films.

It was the unusual shapes of these craft, observed by random witnesses in the sky, that fueled UFO stories. People saw strange silhouettes, and the government remained silent. The result was predictable – rumors flared up like wildfire.

Robert Lazar and the Birth of a Modern Myth

In 1989, engineer Robert Lazar claimed to have worked at Area 51 and studied alien technology, allegedly based on element 115. He even spoke of performing alien autopsies.

His claims were later refuted, but it was this story that made Area 51 a global center of UFO mythology.

When the secret became "semi-official"

For decades, the US government denied the very existence of Area 51.

Only in 2013, after the publication of declassified CIA documents related to the U-2 program, did Washington officially admit that the base did indeed exist.

Since 2018, it has even been unhidden from Google Maps—now anyone can see the test site, although details remain sparse.

What's happening in Area 51 today

Today, Area 51 is part of the Nevada National Security Center (NNSS).

It is believed that testing of the latest military technology, possibly drones, hypersonic vehicles, and surveillance systems, continues here.

Access to the area remains strictly restricted. Warning signs along the borders state that "photography is prohibited" and that violations "may result in deadly force."

Why Area 51 continues to fascinate us

Despite its declassification, Area 51 remains a symbol of mystery and human curiosity.

It's not just a military installation—it's a cultural phenomenon, living at the intersection of science, politics, and mythology.

Its image has become ingrained in films, TV series, games, and comics. From The X-Files to Independence Day, Area 51 has become synonymous with what humanity is not yet ready to understand.

Conclusion

Area 51 is a mirror of our fears and dreams.

It embodies the human desire to look beyond the known, to touch the forbidden secret, and perhaps find the answer to the eternal question: are we alone in the universe?
