The Toyota RAV4 will be re-released in the style of old Chevrolet SUVs (11 photos)
Japanese carmaker Mitsuoka has announced the re-release of the Buddy crossover, returning to the market after a two-year hiatus. However, production of this nostalgic RAV4-based SUV will remain strictly limited. Only 150 units will be built by 2026. 
Mitsuoka unveiled the Buddy crossover back in 2020. The Toyota RAV4, with a body redesigned to resemble vintage American SUVs, enjoyed strong demand, but the company decided to stick with its limited-edition strategy. Over the next four years, 1,200 Buddy units were produced, after which production ceased.
In May 2026, Mitsuoka will resume production on the previous-generation RAV4 platform, as before. The new Buddy promises improved equipment. Several additional exterior colors will also be available, and only 30 crossovers in Globe One White Pearl II will be available.
The Buddy differs from the RAV4 with new body panels on the front end, a custom tailgate, and chrome bumpers. The crossover also comes with original vintage-style lighting. The main interior change is the seat trim. All 2026 Buddy models will be based on the RAV4 hybrid version with a 2.5-liter engine, CVT, and all-wheel drive.
Prices for the Buddy in Japan start at 7,260,000 yen, which is approximately one and a half times the price of a standard Toyota RAV4 Hybrid. X.
