Two people were reported dead after a cargo plane skidded off the runway at Hong Kong International Airport. The airport's northern runway was closed following the incident, Hong Kong International Airport said.

Photos taken after the accident show the Boeing 747 cargo plane, liveried AirACT, partially submerged near the airport seawall, with its emergency flaps deployed and its nose and tail sections separated.

Following the incident, the airport's northern runway was closed, Hong Kong International Airport announced, adding that the southern and central runways would remain operational. The airport later added that no flights would operate on Monday.

Four crew members on board were rescued, the airport said in a statement. One ground staff member was also rescued, while another remains missing.

Later, the South China Morning Post, citing police, reported the deaths of two people on board the ground vehicle.

According to CNN, two airport employees were killed in a car that the plane struck and pushed into the water.

"Unfortunately, an airport security patrol car was present at the time. The plane collided with the patrol car and pushed it into the sea," said Stephen Yu, HKIA's executive director of airport operations.

The plane, arriving from Dubai, landed at approximately 3:50 a.m. local time. The airport confirmed that the flight number on board was Emirates Airlines.

According to Wesley Yang, technical director of the Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department, the plane showed no signs of distress during its landing approach. "We did not receive any requests for assistance from the pilots," he said.

Emirates Airlines said in a statement that flight EK9788 was damaged during landing in Hong Kong on Monday and was a Boeing 747 cargo aircraft leased from ACT Airlines and operated with minimal expenses. "The crew has been confirmed to be safe and there was no cargo on board," Emirates said in a statement.

ACT Airlines is a Turkish carrier that provides additional cargo capacity to major airlines.
