A San Diego, USA, landlord contacted the police after realizing he hadn't seen his tenant for several weeks. When officers entered the home, they were shocked.
On October 1st, officers from the San Diego Humane Society, with the support of the Sheriff's Department, began an inspection. They were met with a terrifying sight: the entire space, from floor to ceiling, was littered with household items and trash. But most terrifying of all, they discovered 11 dogs and two cats among the mess.
The animals were forced to create a unique system of tunnels to navigate the house.
Animal hoarding is a mental disorder in which a person has more pets than they can handle.
An estimated 250,000 pets fall victim to hoarders in the United States each year.
It took the team four days to clear the area and locate all the pets. Many dogs were hiding under beds and furniture, complicating the multi-day rescue operation.

The Pomeranian and Chihuahua were in poor condition. They had fleas, skin problems, and long nails. They are currently receiving medical care at the San Diego Humane Society campus in Oceanside, California.
There is a possibility that not all the animals have been found. Therefore, traps and surveillance cameras have been installed in the house.

"This is a heartbreaking story, but we're glad the animals are now safe," says Jace Huggins of the San Diego Humane Society. "Unfortunately, these types of incidents occur when owners are overwhelmed with work or personal issues that interfere with their ability to care for their animals. If you or someone you love is struggling with pet care, please reach out before the situation gets out of control."
The San Diego Humane Society cares for 792 dogs, a record high.
