A rare two-character license plate is wanted for $1.6 million (4 photos)
RM Sotheby's will auction off a two-character registration plate, 1F, in London. It is estimated to sell for between £800,000 and £1.2 million. If the buyer does pay this amount for the plate, it will set a UK record for such a sale.
The plate is known to have been first used to register a car in 1957 in Essex. One of the last cars registered with this plate is said to be a Ferrari 812 GTS. No further details have been released, except that 1F has not previously appeared in the public domain.
The current record price for a license plate in the UK is £520,000 (approximately $700,000). The expected price for a 1F plate could buy a property in one of London's prestigious districts.
Even if the plate sells for the highest bid, the sale will not set a world record. According to the Guinness Book of Records, the most expensive license plate in the world is currently the combination of the characters P-7. In 2023, this license plate was auctioned in Dubai, fetching 55 million dirhams, or approximately $15 million. The high price may be due to the auction organizers' promise to donate the proceeds to a charitable foundation established by the leadership of Dubai and the UAE.
