Key model updates

Volvo has unveiled the updated 2026 EX90, which has received a major upgrade in the form of an all-new 800-volt electrical system. It replaces the previous 400-volt architecture and promises a number of benefits.

Improved charging system

The manufacturer noted that their battery management software uses a smart algorithm to work in tandem with the 800-volt system to optimize charging, making it significantly faster than previously possible. With these changes, a 350kW fast charger can add up to 155 miles (250km) of range in just 10 minutes. That’s significantly faster than last year’s model, which was limited to 250kW.

In addition to the faster charging time, Volvo hinted at “more power for acceleration” and improved efficiency. The company also mentioned weight reductions for both the battery and the motors.

Other improvements

The updates don’t just extend to the powertrain: The 2026 EX90 gets a new electrochromic panoramic roof. It’s borrowed from the ES90 sedan and features “darkening” glass that can be adjusted at the touch of a button.

Buyers will also find several new features, including “related safety alerts for slippery roads, hazards ahead and accidents ahead.” The emergency stop system can also call Volvo’s emergency center once the car automatically stops after the driver becomes unable to react.

Among other changes is an updated automatic emergency steering system that works in the dark. Volvo also mentioned a parallel parking function for the Park Pilot Assist system.

Improved computing power

Last but not least, the EX90 has become smarter, as it has been equipped with dual NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin-based mainframe computers, which provide 500 TOPS of computing power. Interestingly, 2025 EX90 owners will also receive this upgrade by scheduling a visit to their Volvo dealer.

Volvo’s investment in America

Earlier this summer, Volvo announced plans to produce the XC60 in the United States, starting in late 2026. It will be built at its Ridgeville, South Carolina, plant, and the company confirmed that both micro-hybrid and plug-in hybrid options will be available.

Volvo said today that it will continue to invest in the plant as part of its efforts to reach full capacity in the coming years. The plant has a capacity of 150,000 units per year, but it is far from being at full capacity, as it currently produces the slow-selling EX90 and Polestar 3.

The XC60 will help, but Volvo also announced plans for a “new, next-generation hybrid model.” It will go into production by 2030 and will be “developed to meet the specific needs of the U.S. market.” Volvo didn’t elaborate, but rumors are that it will be the next-generation XC90.

Our investment plans reaffirm our long-term commitment to the US market and our manufacturing operations in South Carolina.

Volvo CEO Gokan Samuelsson added that 2025 marks their 70th anniversary in the United States, and they have sold more than five million cars there over the past seven decades.

These updates demonstrate Volvo’s strategic approach to electrification and adapting to market demands. The move to an 800-volt architecture not only improves vehicle performance, but also fits into the overall trend among automakers towards increasing the efficiency of electric vehicles. The investment in American manufacturing demonstrates the brand's long-term presence in one of the world's key markets, especially given the growing competition in the electric SUV segment.
