Footage from the scene shows the corner of the building collapsed. 
"NYPD is responding to a partial building collapse at 207 Alexander Avenue in the Bronx," the statement reads.
The X page of the official New York City Emergency Management (NYCEM) system states that traffic delays are expected due to the collapse. Emergency responders are working near Alexander Avenue and East 135th Street in residential neighborhoods in the Bronx, one of New York City's five boroughs north of Manhattan. Residents have been asked to avoid the area.
The NYCEM website states that emergency services are working at the collapse site. "Expect debris, smoke, dust, emergency vehicles, and traffic in the area," the agency states.
According to the BBC, the building in question is a 17-story residential complex called Mitchel Houses. It is one of 2,400 public housing buildings across New York City. The collapse occurred at 8:13 AM local time (3:13 PM Moscow time). There were no reports of injuries. It is not yet clear what caused the disaster.
CBC News reports that a 20-story building collapsed. The FDNY initially reported that it was responding to a report of a possible gas explosion and a likely collapse of the building's incinerator shaft, the television station reports.
