A bra instead of a bag: a girl found a way to avoid paying for luggage (5 photos)
"In January, I was flying home from Lisbon on Wizz Air. The only free bag I was allowed to bring was a 40 x 30 x 20 cm bag. Luckily, I had a fishing vest with lots of pockets. But then I started thinking about what else I could do," says Chelsea Dickinson.
"I was standing in front of the mirror in the airport bathroom, trying to pull a top over my brand-new pink size 5 bra. Then I put on a shirt, and then a vest. With each step, my reflection became more and more curvy. I laughed, remembering how I'd stuff toilet paper under my shirt as a kid.
"I carefully zipped up my shirt, took one last look in the mirror, and headed for the exit, praying no one would notice that I had almost half my suitcase on my chest."
"When I walked out, James, my boyfriend, looked me up and down. He was silent, but his expression clearly said, 'What the hell have you come up with this time?'"
The resourceful traveler explained: "The idea came to me early one morning while wandering around H&M in Lisbon. I was thinking about a sweatshirt with deep pockets or a compact bag that could be hidden under a coat. But then I saw a huge bra on sale for 5 euros."
"I wasn't going to go through security like I'd just had a boob job in Portugal. I just had to get weighed and have my luggage inspected."
“At the boarding gate, I took a deep breath, trying to calm myself. I always get a little nervous when I break airline rules. Many have heard horror stories of passengers being asked at the last minute to unpack their bags, check them in, or pay hefty fines. I imagined the gate agent looking at me suspiciously and asking why I looked like I’d swallowed my backpack. But in reality, everything went smoothly. No one even noticed me. Boarding went smoothly, and I couldn’t wait to get to my seat and change out of this ridiculous outfit.”
The method worked, but the British woman had to endure some discomfort. She offers other tried-and-true tricks:
A travel pillow—it's surprisingly roomy and doesn't raise any questions.
A fishing vest—the pocket will even fit a laptop.
Use a duty-free bag—stuff a couple of sweaters in it and board the plane looking like you just bought perfume.
