Both parachutes opened: the mystery of the death of an experienced athlete in Italy (5 photos)
One of Italy's most experienced skydivers has died despite his parachutes opening. Sandro Bigozzi, 49, made nearly 6,000 jumps before taking his final step into the sky on September 6 in Montecompatri, a town near Rome.
Two hours before his death, he posted a video of his latest jump.
Investigators who interviewed witnesses believe Bigozzi's parachutes opened late, preventing the thrill-seeker from slowing down. They also admit that the athlete could have lost consciousness during the fall. An autopsy will be performed in the coming days.
Sandro worked as a sales representative for a pharmaceutical company. He is survived by his wife and two small children.
This happened just two months after the tragic death of world-famous parachutist Felix Baumgartner. In July, the 56-year-old Austrian suffered cardiac arrest while paragliding in Porto Sant'Elpidio, Italy. The aircraft lost control and crashed into a building near the pool at the Le Mimose del Club del Sole resort. Doctors tried to revive Baumgartner, but he was pronounced dead before the air ambulance arrived.
An eyewitness said: "I was here on the beach, turned towards Le Mimose and suddenly noticed a paraglider. I thought it was about to land, but it was falling rapidly."
Baumgartner collaborated with Red Bull. On October 14, 2012, he made a successful jump from the stratosphere (39 kilometers).
