The Spanish town of Buñol hosted the 80th La Tomatina festival, during which locals and visitors take part in the traditional "tomato fight".
Tourists from all over the world came to the festival, who had to pay €15 for an entrance ticket. Together with locals, they threw about 120 tons of tomatoes at each other.
The festival began on August 27 at noon, when six trucks loaded with tomatoes drove into the city center. The "battle" was started by volunteers throwing tomatoes from their cars at spectators. At the end of the day, the streets and houses are cleaned with water hoses and fire trucks.
La Tomatina has been held in Buñol since 1945, on the last Wednesday of August. The festival was inspired by local children throwing tomatoes at each other.
In the 1950s, the festival was briefly banned by Spanish dictator Francisco Franco, but residents actively protested this decision. Since the 1980s, La Tomatina has been considered a national holiday, attracting thousands of tourists every year.
