Passengers in Mallorca Suffered Fractures Due to a False Fire Alarm (2 photos + 1 video)
More than a dozen Ryanair passengers have been injured, including broken bones, at Palma de Mallorca airport. The plane's crew reported a fire on Saturday morning before taking off for Manchester. Panic gripped people, with some running from the cabin onto the wings and then jumping onto the runway.
Eighteen people were injured. Six were reportedly taken to hospital.
Savannah, 26, was returning from holiday with a friend and their mothers. Her mother needed surgery after breaking her ankle in three places. A friend's mother jumped from the wing of a plane and suffered broken wrists, feet and elbows.
A British woman has described the chaos when a flight attendant ordered everyone to leave the plane and leave their belongings.
"We got out over the wing. There were no slides. I hurt my shoulder, my friend hurt her knee," Savannah said.
The group was taken by ambulance to the airport medical centre. Doctors said they could not fly until Monday.
The airline later said the fire alarm was false.
Flight attendants reportedly called emergency services at 00:35 local time on 5 July. Four ambulances, airport firefighters and Civil Guard officers were sent to the scene.
An airport worker filmed terrified passengers jumping out of the plane and onto the runway.
He tells a colleague on the radio: "The plane was about to take off, and people started jumping from the wing onto the ground. Something is happening, something is happening, they are evacuating the plane. The firefighters are coming now."

A representative of the regional emergency response coordination center said: "At 00:36 we received a report of a fire on a plane at Palma airport. Four ambulances were sent to the scene. Each had two primary life support units and two additional ones. Eighteen people were injured, six of whom were taken to hospital."
A Ryanair spokesman said: "A flight from Palma to Manchester was cancelled due to a false fire alarm. Passengers were evacuated via inflatable slides and taken to the terminal. During disembarkation, several passengers sustained minor injuries (sprained ankles, etc.) and the crew sought immediate medical attention. To minimise disruption, we quickly prepared a replacement aircraft to operate the flight, which departed Palma at 07:05 this morning. We sincerely apologise to the affected passengers for any inconvenience this may have caused."
