Romanian stadiums are currently experiencing a massive invasion of moths. Heavy rains have caused temperatures to rise and the insects' reproductive cycle to accelerate. These moths carry pollen on their wings, making it difficult to breathe.
In Romania, moths have emerged too early and are terrorizing stadiums.
Bianca Popescu said she went to the Rapid Giulesti stadium as part of a film crew. According to her, it was extremely inconvenient to film there because of the millions of moths. "They had dust on their wings and there were so many of them," she recalls. "They were throwing dirt in the air and everyone was coughing." The invasion of insects was captured on video.
A few days earlier, moths had taken over the Anghel Iordanescu stadium during a match between Romania and Spain. It was held as part of the European Under-19 Football Championship. Many fans left the match, scared of the moths. The Spanish players were also horrified.
According to local authorities, the gamma metalloid was spotted at the stadiums. They explained that recent heavy rains had led to higher temperatures, which had accelerated the breeding cycle of this species. These insects are not dangerous to humans, but they can eat a lot of plants. They feed on lettuce, cabbage, beans and potatoes.
The butterflies will not be poisoned, however. "This is a seasonal phenomenon that lasts three to four days," the authorities noted.
