The town of Nailsworth in Gloucestershire, UK, is in trouble after workers closed a key road during a gas main repair. The town is famous for its large number of shops, but the closure threatens their existence.
Residents say the town is as quiet as it was during the COVID-19 lockdown. Streets and car parks are empty, with hardly any people around.
Charlotte Miles, the owner of the gift and stationery shop, said the shop's turnover has dropped significantly. The woman is not sure that the business will last another week.
The utility company noted that it will not compensate for expenses if the work is carried out for less than 28 days. The insurance company does not cover expenses related to accidents on gas pipes.
Next to her store, workers had to dig a trench two meters deep almost the entire width of the road to get to a large gas pipe for repairs. Journalists say that the gas pipeline was damaged on April 14 by a team that was carrying out road works. The workers touched the pipe and this led to a large gas leak.
Gloucestershire Highways Agency workers immediately closed the road. Residents in the surrounding area were evacuated by police.
Residents were allowed back after two weeks. However, businesses are struggling to survive as the road closure continues to affect the town.
One worker working on a 50m section of the gas pipeline said he "felt really sorry" for local businesses. He said it could take at least another week to complete the work, which could be catastrophic for many businesses.
