As early as 2026, serial Mercedes-Benz will receive a compact steering wheel in the form of a steering wheel, which will become part of a new steering system without a direct connection to the wheels. Thus, the German brand has followed the path paved by a number of other automakers, including Tesla and Lexus.





The steer-by-wire system is designed to make life easier for the driver behind the wheel, freeing him from the need to intercept the steering wheel during sharp turns and maneuvering at low speeds, for example when parking. At the same time, the sensitivity of the wheels to the rotation of the steering wheel will change depending on the speed of movement.



The company claims that the electronic steering wheel, equipped with a backup power source for safety, was tested both at the proving grounds and in real conditions. The total mileage of the prototypes exceeded one million kilometers.



It is expected that the first to receive the steering wheel in 2026 will be the restyled version of the EQS electric sedan, followed by the flagship S-class line and other cars with the three-pointed star.
