The emergency occurred in the largest container port in the country, to understand the scale of the port: it is located on an area of 2,400 hectares, and more than 70 million tons of cargo are handled here annually.
On April 26, at about 12:30 local time, near the administrative building in the port of Shahid Rajaee, first it started to smoke, and then it exploded, so much so that the number of victims has already exceeded 750 people. 14 died at the scene of the tragedy.
It starts with an orange haze from ammonium nitrate (often used as a fertilizer), then a fire, and then the main explosion.
Preliminary information, kindly shared by the BBC, suggests that sodium perchlorate may have been the cause.
Customs officials later released a statement, broadcast on Iranian state television, saying that the explosion was likely caused by a fire in a warehouse storing hazardous and chemical materials.
The flames are spreading very quickly across the port area.
Emergency services and port authorities are moving containers and building embankments to contain the spread of the fire, and aircraft are also helping to extinguish the fire.
Air traffic over the city has been temporarily suspended.
