Elephants' reaction to an earthquake

Elephants at the San Diego Zoo stood back to back when they felt an earthquake. This behavior is a natural response to perceived threats to the herd.

Elephants during the earthquake at the San Diego Zoo in California surrounded their babies to protect them. The older elephants Ndlula, Umngani, and Khosi stood around seven-year-old elephants Zuli and Mkaya.

According to the zoo, when elephants sense a threat, they gather in a circle and “kind of freeze, gathering information about the danger.” The young ones are usually in the center, while the adults face outward for defense.

The earthquake measured 5.2 on the Richter scale.
