Tesla Cybertruck on autopilot refused to ram a wall with a painted empty road (1 photo + 1 video)
Just recently, there was a post where a Tesla electric car rammed a painted wall without seeing it as an obstacle, and this time a post about the Cybertruck, which was still able to recognize the obstacle, but with some nuances.
The author of the original video, engineer and popular video blogger Mark Rober, compared several cars using lidar and optical "autopilots". The former turned out to be the winner in all scenarios, including automatic braking in front of a child dummy, including in artificially created dense fog and heavy rain conditions. At the same time, the most discussed test was stopping in front of a banner showing the continuation of the road. The car with lidar coped with the test, but the Cybertruck, which, like all Tesla models, relies only on cameras, failed it. It is important to note that the pickup truck was equipped with the most basic version of the semi-autonomous driving system, which is simply called Autopilot and is standard equipment.
Kyle Paul also installed a banner with a road image on the road and drove towards it in his 2022 Tesla Model Y with a more advanced autopilot system, the so-called Full Self-Driving (FSD). Several attempts did not yield any results: each time, the driver had to press the brake at the last moment.
Then he borrowed a Cybertruck from a friend, purchased a couple of months ago, also with FSD activated. In terms of software, this is about the same system, but if the new Cybertruck runs on the latest-generation HW4 chip, the pre-restyling Model Y uses older HW3 hardware. And the pickup with more recent hardware and FSD successfully passed the test.
The most modern hardware and software for FSD on Tesla Cybertruck were installed from the very beginning, but this function was only activated in October last year. At the same time, Elon Musk has been promising for several years in a row at meetings with investors that the company will launch a full-fledged autopilot "already this year". For Tesla's business, this is a very problematic situation, since recently it has been betting on the development of its own unmanned taxi service.
