17 photos of memorable places in modern times and in the past (17 photos)

28 March 2025

You can endlessly be sad about the past, regretting that it is leaving. Or you can find charm in the modern world! Let it change - this is inevitable. However, it is better to live in the present moment, try to see the positive and beauty, instead of immersing yourself in longing for bygone eras.

Above is a painting that depicts the ancient Roman Herculaneum in 79. Below is the same area, but this is a photograph of modern Italy

The author brilliantly combined two photos. These are all shots from the Metropolitan Museum. Only on the left side we see visitors in 1910, and on the right side - already in our millennium

An ancient historical monument in Rome is the Triumphal Arch of Constantine. It was captured in 1943, which is shown in the top photo, and below is the landmark in our time

What is most striking is that to this day the structure, erected in 315, excites human minds. A masterpiece built for centuries in every sense!

Once in 1966, this area was captured on camera during the filming of the movie "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly." And below is a photo taken in the same corner, but only 54 years later

The difference can only be identified by a modern pole

By the way, the photo on the left is not black and white at all. Vladimir was photographed in 1911 by Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorsky - he became a pioneer in terms of mastering color photography.

Remains of Buddha statues miraculously survived in Afghanistan. In 1963, their outlines could be seen almost completely. Alas, in 2008, almost nothing remained of the majestic monuments: they were destroyed by the Taliban at the very beginning of the new millennium

Looking at the Church of St. Martin in Cologne, in what condition it was in 1946, it is hard to believe that the building could have survived until our era. But look! On the right is a photo of what the church is like today!

Edinburgh, Scotland

This is a complex of monuments in India under the general name Pancha Rathas. In 1825 and now

Turkey, Ephesus. Above is a drawing that has been preserved since the 2nd century!

The legendary Mount Rushmore. Above is a photo taken in 1922, and below is one taken in 2018

The Brazilian statue of Christ the Redeemer. In 1930, scaffolding was built around it

A wonderful couple of photos of the Charles Bridge in Prague. Even the dogs are standing there posing, only the old man is missing. The top photo was taken at the very beginning of the 20th century

Athens was pretty upset compared to the situation in 1954

Above is a painting that shows Rome as it was in 1834. Below is a photo taken from almost the same place on the banks of the Tiber, only in our times

American Pittsburgh. Surprisingly, the city has not changed much since the distant 1917

Everything flows, everything changes. But we should not forget that man directly influences change. So it is better to create and preserve the legacy of the past, rather than bring only destruction!
