American fighter accidentally "bombed" a South Korean city (6 photos)
An uncontrolled release of ordnance occurred during military exercises right over the city of Pocheon.
A tragedy occurred during military exercises at the Seungjin training ground in South Korea. An Air Force fighter jet mistakenly dropped 8 MK-82 bombs over the city of Pocheon, the Yonhap news agency reported.
"Around 10 a.m., a report was received that a shell had allegedly landed on the road near a house in Pocheon... causing seven people to be slightly and seriously injured and destroying a church and six other buildings in the village," the report said.
The incident occurred on March 6, 42 kilometers east of Seoul. The country's air force said it was investigating and apologized for the damage caused to civilians. It is known that the KF-16 fighter jet used in the exercises is a South Korean copy of the American fourth-generation F-16 Fighting Falcon.
The MK-82 bomb is designed to destroy buildings and bridges, it creates a crater eight meters in diameter and 2.4 meters deep. The bomb is dropped without guidance, in an unguided mode.
After the incident, residents of a village near the city were ordered to evacuate as the military carried out work to defuse unexploded bombs, Yonhap News Agency reported. It is unknown whether homeowners and car owners who suffered damage from the uncontrolled dumping of ordnance will receive compensation.
