During an annual competition off the coast of Port Stephens, Australia, a team of fishermen encountered three great white sharks. In the footage, a four-metre predator is seen grabbing an empty fish tank. After the team got far enough away from the fish, another, even larger one, estimated to be over five metres long, surfaced nearby.

Newcastle and Port Stephens Fishing Club president Troy Radford told Daily Mail Australia that the second fish "may have caused damage" to the five-metre boat.

"The shark was biting into the stern, grabbing the side. It was so big that it managed to slightly submerge the boat... Big fish, small vessel," the expert said.

But no matter how scary these shots were, the fishermen admit: "How lucky we were there. This is a sight that will be remembered for a lifetime."

While young great white sharks are quite common in this bay, it is much rarer to see an adult, let alone three.

When the second day of the competition was cancelled due to bad weather, Radford joined the X-Stream team for lunch. He was immediately shown the footage.

“They were still in awe. The adrenaline was pumping,” he said.

The X-stream team shared the video in the hopes of raising awareness of the issue that threatens the future of their favourite fishing spot, the Hunter Offshore Wind Zone. The 1,800 square kilometre site, located along the coast of Swansea and Port Stephens, was announced in mid-2023 and is expected to power up to 4.2 million homes.

“We are extremely concerned about the impact of the Hunter project. Wind farms emit electromagnetic fields... Sharks rely on electromagnetic signals and their noses are very sensitive. The public needs to know what we could lose,” Radford said, stressing that Climate Change and Energy Secretary Chris Bowen had chosen “the worst possible location”.

The waters are famous for their rich biodiversity, and fishermen from all over the country come here to catch marlin.
