BMW showed an electric sedan with a new supercomputer (14 photos)

BMW has unveiled a prototype called the Vision Driving Experience (VDE), equipped with an electric powertrain and built on the Neue Klasse platform. The electric car with motors producing up to 18,000 Nm of torque was created to test the latest control module, the Heart of Joy supercomputer, which BMW intends to install on future models from the “New Class” line.

Heart of Joy “thinks” ten times faster than the ECUs currently used. BMW creates such units to combine in one device the control of interconnected systems, which was previously distributed between several modules. Heart of Joy will take control of the power plant, the braking system with recuperation, and the steering. The integration should minimize delays in the reactions of the electric car. According to official data, they are now measured in milliseconds.

Accordingly, BMWs on the Neue Klasse platform will be controlled not only more precisely, but also more smoothly. In addition, the integration will increase the efficiency of on-board systems. For example, the recuperation function will become 25% more productive. According to BMW's calculations, such an increase will allow 98% of everyday driving to do without mechanical brakes. In fact, they will only be needed in emergency situations. In total, BMW plans to use four Heart of Joy units on each electric car. Additional ones will take control of driver assistants, comfort functions, and the media system.

BMW VDE was created specifically for testing Heart of Joy and therefore is endowed with such excessive traction indicators. The developers are confident that if the new unit can handle such a flow of information, it will also show its best performance on regular mass-produced cars. It is claimed that one should not count on the appearance of VDE on the conveyor. However, it gives certain hints about the appearance of BMW Neue Klasse passenger cars and serves as another confirmation of the concern's plans to produce charged electric cars.

In the cabin, the running prototype was also equipped with a number of electronic solutions already announced for production cars: a central touchscreen of an unusual shape and a Panoramic Vision display across the entire width of the windshield. In the photo, you can see an abundance of carbon panels, an emphasized sports steering wheel and control buttons. Another feature of the test car is the wheel illumination, the shade of which depends on the operating mode of the power electronics. When accelerating, the lights glow green, if recuperation is engaged - blue, and when the mechanical brakes are turned on, an orange color appears.

BMW plans to show the Vision Driving Experience live at the Shanghai Auto Show. The concern may share additional technical information along the way.
