At the moment, there are several crazy projects from famous developers that will keep you glued to your computer for days, presenting you with a magnificent plot and stunning atmosphere combined with brilliant musical accompaniment and well-developed mechanics.

Alone in the dark (1992)

The game "Alone in the dark" was released back in 1992, and despite its square graphics, it excited the hearts of gamers quite well.

From the very beginning, we are not allowed to look around the room normally, since a scary monster is breaking through the window, and a creepy zombie is trying to appear from under the floor. Yes, knowledgeable people remember that you can move a cabinet to the window, and cover the floor hatch with a chest, but for beginners, the appearance of these monsters was a very unexpected turn.

And during the further passage, many tests and puzzles awaited us, which were difficult to pass with a calm expression on your face.

True, the second and third parts of the game really let us down in terms of both the plot and the scary moments.

Resident Evil (1996)

In the late 90s, the game "Resident Evil" could tickle our nerves quite well. The atmosphere of an empty mansion was quite frightening, and then there were the living dead (that is, the infected) endlessly trying to kill us, appearing as if out of nowhere.

What is the very beginning of the game worth, where we need to split up with our team members and explore the mansion alone. The first zombie we came across, who slowly turned towards us, could already make our hearts beat faster.

But the constant knocking that haunted us throughout almost the entire game created an even more frightening atmosphere. Personally, it really got on my nerves.

By the way, 7 sequels of this game were released later, and the first 4 parts have already acquired their own remasters, thanks to which the games received a second life.

And by the way, despite the fact that the seventh and eighth parts sharply stand out from the main series, there are no fewer scary moments there. Oddly enough, but more than anything else in the game "Resident Evil 8: The village" I was scared by the mission in Donna Beneviento's mansion with the doll Angie, where we had to run away from a strange laughing baby monster every now and then.

Outlast (2014)

Not every gamer had enough patience and psyche to complete the game "Outlast" to the end. We take on the role of a simple journalist who secretly goes to a psychiatric hospital to find out about the secret experiments on people being conducted there.

Inside the hospital, the journalist discovers corpses and living, but disfigured and crazy patients. After one of them suddenly attacks us, our hearts sink into our heels, and the game hasn't even started yet.

The worst thing will happen when we meet a former hospital guard named Chris, who looks more like a super mutant from "Fallout". Since our journalist has no weapons, all we can do is run from him and hide wherever we can (under beds, in lockers, etc.).

The game doesn't let us relax for a second, because even when we feel safe after being saved from a stranger, it turns out that the stranger is a sadistic doctor who experiments on people, and now he wants to do the same to us.

Overall, an amazing game, but very creepy. Personally, I never finished it. Apparently, I don't have such nerves of steel to calmly finish the game.

Alan Wake (2010, 2021)

We are talking specifically about the 2021 remaster. In fact, this is the case when the developers really tried hard and updated the project very well. Among the disadvantages of the game, one can highlight the boring mechanics and the same type of combat, because, no matter how you look at it, the game was designed back in 2010. But, by the way, the original game is also very cool, and made the hearts of gamers beat with frantic force.

But all this is more than compensated by the great work invested in the graphic component, as well as the magnificent plot. Alan Wake Remastered is one of those games that makes you feel the atmosphere from the very first minutes.

From the very beginning, you are immersed in the game with your head and empathize with the hero in every possible way. And most importantly, this desire does not leave you until the very end of the game, especially since even its 2 additions do not reveal all the cards of the storyline, which speaks of the future release of a new part of Alan Wake.

Tormented souls (2021)

This game is a classic horror, in its truest sense. The developers of "Tormented souls", creating this project, chose the best of Resident Evil, Alone in the Dark and Silent Hill, creating an interesting and exciting story that will definitely not leave you indifferent.

There are no boring dialogues and sharp plot twists, but the abundance of puzzles and interesting mechanics more than compensate for this omission. In addition, the plot of the game is not exactly simple and boring.

From the very beginning, a number of questions arise, the answers to which must be sought throughout the game. But what is truly captivating is the atmosphere. Good graphics, a large number of different levels, and the appearance of the main character (especially at the beginning, because even without one eye she is not bad) - all this makes you plunge into the world of "Tormented Souls" with your head.

Summer of '58 (2021)

EMIKA_GAMES is a developer from the "one man army" category. The thing is that he designs his games alone, and "Summer of '58" is no exception. Yes, this is not a multi-hour walker with many logical chains and inconsistencies that you will need to unravel. In fact, its passage will take you no more than 2-3 hours, if you want to go around all the locations up and down. But this is an amazing, atmospheric, logically verified and juicy game that will allow you to enjoy all the delights of the horror genre.

This game makes you want to play again and again, especially for thrill-seekers, because Summer of '58 is the one that makes one place shrink and another shrink. The game's atmosphere is simply amazing, the plot is simple and, at the same time, fascinating, the picture and music are captivating. And even the good old screamers don't look pathetic, because everything in this game is very well thought out, logical and adequate.

And all this simplicity touches the soul. There are no hours-long studies, endlessly boring puzzles, stupid quests - everything is simple, accessible and very interesting.

At Dead Of Night (2020)

If you are a fan of the "psychological thriller" genre, then you will really like this game. In fact, this is one of the few projects made in the form of an interactive movie, and there is clearly more of a movie here than a game. The madness of the antagonist physically forces you to dive into this atmosphere, to be imbued with his madness.

In addition, the developers managed to combine a paired plot - a psychopathic maniac and a mysterious story that once played out in a hotel. On the one hand, this is an extremely simple game that does not have any stunning features. But on the other hand, the cinematic excerpts create an amazing atmosphere. You will really experience tension many times more serious than when watching a regular movie, because here you make decisions.

The Beast Inside (2019)

At the time of its release, this game was considered one of the scariest in its genre. In The Beast Inside, you won't even have time to prepare and tune in to something scary - the game will immerse you in the story right off the bat. Its beginning is a classic thriller with detective elements, but then everything develops much more dynamically.

In this project, the developers offer players a "three-layer" plot. Until the very end, it is unclear who the villain really is, and how exactly the past is connected to the present. And several unpredictable endings will make you replay the game again and again, looking for key plot twists. And most importantly, "The Beast Inside" will have only 2-3 screamers, but the atmosphere of the game is so cool that it will make you shudder at every rustle. This is the kind of game after which you go check the locks and windows. Just like that, just in case.

The Dark Pictures Anthology (2019)

It is physically impossible to single out one game from this series, because they are all incredibly good. Even House of Ashes, which was liked the least by players, amazed many with its endings, because Supermassive Games were able to combine reality with myths, people and monsters, legends and modern times very successfully. As for the other projects, namely Man of Medan, Little Hope and The Devil in Me - they are all just insanely good, and if you are a fan of the interactive movie genre, the "dark pictures" series will definitely be to your taste.

I would like to separately highlight "Little Hope". The gorgeous plot, telling the story in 2 times, is simply amazing, and the ending is something that sends shivers down your spine. At the same time, finishing the game, you understand how subtle the hints of the developers were throughout the narrative. Unfortunately, there are also annoying moments in the game, such as moving to the second timeline. The first time it is scary, and then it starts to irritate, but on the other hand, each time the segment ends at a very interesting plot twist, and this only provokes and warms up the interest. Again, Little Hope is one of the best games with an unpredictable ending, and if you like this genre, you will definitely like "dark pictures".

In the end, I would like to note the following common features - they are all made with soul. Yes, somewhere the picture quality was clearly not enough, somewhere they allowed a hole in the plot, and somewhere they forgot to add modern mechanics. But you will experience a lot of emotions when passing them, because the above-mentioned projects will not leave you indifferent.
