A group of friends who were having fun in a Greek restaurant in Birmingham, UK, decided to join the traditional practice of breaking plates "for luck", but it turned out that it was not free.
The guests of the establishment were celebrating the upcoming wedding of one of the company members, so they wanted to make the evening as bright as possible and asked the waiters to break several plates "for luck".
Rukhshid, who does not want to reveal his real name, thought that he would be brought one plate for each guest, but there were many more dishes. Thus, some of the invited guests took advantage of the opportunity to have fun six times.
Interesting tradition
By the way, breaking plates is an ancient tradition, particularly in Greek culture, which is often mentioned at weddings. This custom symbolizes the beginning of a new life, since broken plates mean that the newlyweds are throwing away their past and starting a new chapter.
Since Rukhshid had never done this before, he decided to give it a try. At that time, the man did not yet know that he would have to pay for the pleasure at the end of the evening. He did not remember the total cost of the bill, but claims that the broken plates cost about $25.
"The plates were clay, not real ones - painted and polished. They were made for the sole purpose of breaking them during the party. Honestly, I expected about eight plates to go, not 50. I had never been to Greek establishments before, so I didn't see how all this was done," the man told Newsweek.
