The only resident of a Greek island received an unexpected gift (2 photos + 1 video)
Journalist Vasilios Saribalidis gave a pensioner the animal she dreamed of. Now Irene Katsotourchi will be able to overcome the hard-to-reach parts of the island without feeling lonely.
80-year-old Irene Katsotourchi, known as Mrs. Rinio, the only resident of the remote Greek island of Kinaros, recently received a touching gift - a donkey, which will become her new companion and assistant.
"After much effort and the help of many friends who believed that we could fulfill our promise, the donkey that Mrs. Rinio dreamed of has finally arrived on Kinaros," Saribalidis wrote.
He also posted photos of Mrs. Rinio happily welcoming the animal. He believes that the donkey will not only become her friend, but will also help her navigate the difficult parts of the island, where one of the last representatives of the older generation continues to lead a traditional life.
Many social media users were touched by the unexpected gift for the lonely pensioner:
"You were and will remain a real person in character and soul! Thank you to everyone who believed and helped to bring to life this complex project, the result of which was this woman's smile";
"Well done! What people in offices cannot do, you do";
"Bravo Vasilios. The simplest things for ordinary people can and do bring them great joy."
A Life Story on Kinaros
Mrs Rinio was born on the island of Amorgos and spent her childhood on Kinaros. Later, after getting married, she lived with her family on the island of Kalymnos and then moved to Australia. However, years later, the couple decided to return to their homeland and settled on Kinaros, a small and remote island in the Aegean Sea, 160 miles southeast of Athens, Greece.
After the death of her husband in 2013, Mrs Rinio was left alone on the island, continuing to lead a solitary life. Now, thanks to the gift of a donkey, her days will become a little brighter and easier.
