In Iceland, Sundhnukur volcano erupts near city (4 photos + 1 video)
A state of emergency has been declared.
A volcano named Sundhnukur has erupted near Grindavik in Iceland. The RUV broadcaster reported that the area has been evacuated.
"The eruption began in Grindavik. A state of emergency was declared shortly after 21:00 (00:00 Moscow time)," the report said.
A crack almost four kilometers wide formed at the site of the eruption, from which lava flows. Magma is erupting from the ground like a fountain.
"Right now it does not look like Grindavik is in danger, but we cannot say anything until the situation begins to stabilize," Benedikt Ofeigsson, a representative of the Icelandic Meteorological Service, told RUV.
Volcanic lava is moving at a high speed - 6 km/h. Local residents are filming and taking photos of what is happening. Rescuers are circling the volcano in airplanes.
It is also noted that an earthquake occurred in Reykjavik against the backdrop of the eruption, but their relationship has not yet been proven. There is no information about victims at this time either.
It has become known that more than 300 residents have been evacuated.
