How to identify scammers with one question: advice that saved a top manager of Ferrari (3 photos)
As technology advances, scammers reach new heights, and large companies are increasingly being targeted with deepfakes. This time, one of Ferrari's executives almost fell victim.
The other day, one of the company's executives suddenly started receiving WhatsApp messages one after another from an unfamiliar number, but the avatar was of CEO Benedetto Vigna.
Like the CEO himself decided to warn him on a confidential number about an important event in the company.
"Hey, have you heard about the big acquisition we're planning? I may need your help. Be prepared to sign the non-disclosure agreement that our lawyer is going to send as soon as possible. The Italian market regulator and the Milan Stock Exchange have already been informed,” read one of the messages, allegedly sent by Benedetto Vigna.
CEO Benedetto Vigna.
The victim then received a phone call, Vigna’s voice convincing, a perfect imitation of a southern Italian accent. The fake Vigna excitedly informed them that he needed something confidential, a deal that might run into some problems with China and required some kind of currency hedging transaction.
Here the man's doubts finally got the better of him, and he simply asked for clarification on the title of the book that Vigna had recommended to him a few days earlier. After that, the call abruptly ended.
Ferrari has launched an internal investigation. The incident is said to be one of the most prominent cases of deepfake tools being used to conduct a live phone call to infiltrate an internationally recognized business. This is not the first such attempt to impersonate a high-ranking executive. In May, Mark Read, the CEO of advertising giant WPP Plc, was also the target of an unsuccessful but equally complex deepfake scam.
If you are interested in the title of the book, it was "The Decalogue of Complexity: Action, Learning, and Adaptation in the Continuous Formation of the World" by Alberto Felice De Toni.
The bottom line is that we read books and actively recommend them to each other!
