A New York couple was renovating their garden when they noticed something living in the dirt. The homeowners turned to wildlife rehabilitator Karenlynn Streicher for help.

Streicher found a snapping turtle at the site, guarding its eggs.

Experts warn that snapping turtles can be dangerous and can even bite off a finger with their strong jaws.

"We had to get the eggs out properly, saving the precious lives inside them," Stracher said.

When laying eggs, turtles usually dig a hole and fill it with dirt, after which they return to a nearby body of water. In this case, the reptile continued to protect the offspring while people were nearby.

The woman helped the turtle get over the fence to the pond.

Once the turtle was out of sight, Streicher returned to the eggs, took one of the containers and filled it with damp soil. In total, she found 60 eggs (one was damaged), which she covered with another layer of earth.

Describing them in the video, she says: "They're soft and leathery... They don't look like chicken eggs, they're more like ping pong balls."

The woman gave the eggs to a farm where they will be taken care of. The turtles will be released into the wild shortly after hatching.
