A devoted dog ran 6.5 km through the Oregon wilderness to find help for his injured owner. The man missed a turn and his pickup truck fell off a cliff.
Brandon Garrett's pet ran to the family's Baker County campground around 9:30 a.m. Monday, the sheriff said. The man's relatives went searching and found an overturned pickup truck near a creek.
Another of Garrett's four dogs stood guard over the car. Unable to get to the scene of the accident on their own, the family called rescuers.
"Sheriff Ashe arrived on scene and located the vehicle in a steep, brushy ravine. As he sought access to the creek, he heard a man screaming for help," the Baker County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.
It turned out that the driver missed the turn and his pickup truck fell off a cliff. The victim managed to crawl a hundred meters away from the car, but his injuries prevented him from climbing the slope. He spent the night and day in the ravine.
Rescuers pulled Brandon out using a rope system and then airlifted him to the hospital. The man's condition is unknown, but all four dogs survived the terrible incident.
