Porsche 911 became a hybrid (18 photos)
Porsche has unveiled the updated 911 family in perhaps its most significant technical conversion since the move away from air cooling. The iconic sports car has a gas-electric version for the first time - the 911 GTS modification received a new installation. The first 911 hybrid can already be ordered, but it costs at least $165,000.
Porsche was forced to respond to harsh environmental standards, but approached the issue with some technical finesse, abandoning the idea of carrying over any of the existing plug-in powertrains into the 911. For the 911 GTS, they developed a completely new one - such a sports car cannot drive on electric power, but maintains a balance between dynamics, handling, weight distribution and reduced emissions. In addition, it became more powerful, while the weight gain was about 50 kg.
The new hybrid is based on a 3.6-liter boxer engine, built on the basis of the previous 911 GTS engine. In addition to the increased volume, it is distinguished by a new supercharging system: instead of two superchargers, one is used, and it is equipped with an electric drive. The turbocharger helps rotate the 15-horsepower engine, which can also generate electricity when there is excess exhaust gas, which is sent either to a compact 1.9-kilowatt battery or directly to the second engine.
The auxiliary traction motor is integrated into the 8-speed PDK. The entire system develops 541 hp. With. and 610 Nm, which allows you to reach 100 km/h in 3 seconds with a top speed of 312 km/h. The Porsche 911 GTS will be equipped as standard with steering rear wheels and adaptive suspension, and for an additional fee - all-wheel drive. At the same time, the sports car acquired new bumpers with active shutters, different headlights with integrated turn signals and a modified rear design, which can be supplemented with a fixed wing.
Porsche also modified the basic 911 Carrera. Its 3-liter engine was equipped with a dual supercharging system, which was previously used on the non-hybrid GTS, due to which the engine power increased to 394 hp. With. and 450 Nm. This 911, like the hybrid, will only be sold with a robot and will accelerate to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds with a top speed of 294 km/h, almost the same as before.
Subtle but significant changes have occurred in the interior of the 911. The authentic socket to the left of the steering wheel, where you had to insert the key fob, has been replaced with a conventional start button, the instruments have finally given way to a 12.6-inch digital panel, and the rear seat is no longer included in the basic package - by default updated Porsche 911 double (although the sofa will be returned to its place at the request of the customer without any additional payment). Finally, the media system has been slightly improved.
New items are available in coupe, convertible or targa body styles. Other members of the 911 family, including the Turbo and various GTs, will be updated later - according to some estimates, the restyling of the family will last until 2026. A modification with a manual transmission should also return to the market, but Porsche has not yet specified when exactly this will happen.
