The biologist brought millions to Spain with her discoveries, but did not receive a single euro for it (3 photos)
Giovanna Roncador works at the National Cancer Research Center in Madrid. She heads the department of monoclonal antibodies, which are used to diagnose lymphoma.
Giovanna regularly contacts international companies and tells them about her discoveries. She enters into agreements that bring the center millions of euros a year. But the woman does not receive a single percentage of this amount:
“This situation disappoints me. I was tired and lost motivation. Why are good employees not rewarded?
Giovanna made the most significant discovery together with British researcher Alison Banham. They developed antibodies and monitored the body's immune response.
Alison has been receiving interest for the research since 2004, but Giovanna was not paid her share until 10 years later, and even then not for long.
The National Cancer Research Center introduced a royalty system in 2014 and abolished it again in 2020. The reason is that this form of payment “does not exist in Spanish law.” Local researchers call this problem “Kafkaesque bureaucracy.”
In fact, if the center receives 15,000 € for the sale of antibodies, then the scientist should be paid about 1900 €, and his assistant - 800 €. This practice is common in many countries.
Giovanna sued the National Cancer Research Center. She believes that bureaucracy kills the entrepreneurial spirit in researchers, and Spain should focus on the experience of other countries.
