Dependent parrots - the threat of farms in India (5 photos)
Culinary poppy needs to be grown somewhere; the cheapest ones come from farmers in India. It would work... If it weren't for the drug-addicted parrots that constantly ravage their lands.
And the parrots are there, and the cows in India got hooked on meat from garbage dumps
In India, in general, every animal suffers from some kind of addiction. Monkeys get drunk on fermenting fruit and bite people. Elephants have learned to raid hidden jungle wine villages for booze. We omit snakes that are simply placed in tinctures without asking.
And now there are parrots with severe addictions, which no scarecrows or stuffed animals scare away in their thirst.
Large farm losses
In the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh there are quite large poppy lands - 44,000 hectares, completely legal. They cooperate under license with various pharmaceutical companies. And the local residents would live and get rich if... It wasn’t for the literal ruin of parrots.
And these are drunk elephants. They are sleeping right in the fields, and what should we do with them?
Parrots don't just graze on the farm, they pick poppy heads and fly away with them to somewhere calmer. That is, an attacking flock simply rips off all the heads in a few flights and leaves the farmer with nothing.
Because when a parrot gets used to it, it will not stop flying until the whole field is empty. In this case, usually smart birds lose their memory. Previously, it was possible to shoot a flock once, so that the birds avoided raiding specific points.
Now farmers need to be on duty in the fields around the clock, including at night, because the parrots, mad with thirst for a new dose, have no routine or sense of fear.
Luring with food and catching there, many Hindus are against killing animals - faith does not allow
- They are no longer afraid of our screams, sticks, and even the use of firecrackers! – complains farmer Nandkishore from the outskirts of Neemuch. “Our crops have always been at risk due to too much rain, but now with parrots, we risk being left with zero harvest. But the authorities don’t listen to us, they just laugh.
Some particularly sophisticated parrots allow farmers to collect part of the harvest. If you cut off the head, the most valuable and potent liquid will appear on the stem. This is what the older parrots are waiting for, while the recently settled young ones cannot wait and tear out the stems and heads to take them with them.
And these are photographs from the last decade. And we still haven't come up with anything
In this case, intoxicated parrots themselves injure themselves. They crash into trees and branches, fall underfoot onto roads, where they can be trampled. And if this time the parrot was carried away, when he wakes up, he will again fly to steal in the field.
