An American company wanted to build the world's largest cargo plane (5 photos)
The plane is planned to transport large blades for wind turbines. However, experts doubt the ability to build such a giant.
An American startup announced Napoleonic plans - the Radia company wanted to build the world's largest cargo plane, the main task of which would be to transport blades for wind turbines. The plane was called WindRunner (“Wind Runner”) and presented the world with renderings depicting the future wonder of the world.
The company says that the feature of the aircraft will be not only its impressive size and payload capacity, but also the ability to land on short runways of 1,800 meters in length.
It is noted that the WindRunner's cargo compartment will be 12 times larger than the cargo version of the wide-body Boeing 747-400. The length of the aircraft will be 108.5 meters, height - 24 meters, wingspan - 79.5 meters, carrying capacity - about 80 tons.
The development of such a giant, according to startup representatives, will be able to solve the logistics problem in the fast-growing wind energy industry. WindRunner will be able to deliver turbine blades to hard-to-reach places where there are no full-fledged airports (it is assumed that the miracle technology will be able to land on dirt and gravel strips). Thus, the company says, the world will be able to quickly transition to environmentally friendly energy sources.
The ideas voiced and the plane in the picture look beautiful, but aviation expert Roman Gusarov considers the project a gamble. According to him, it takes at least 10 years to create such an aircraft, and a startup is unlikely to be able to do this. Gusarov emphasized that there are no problems in terms of carrying capacity; 80 tons is not such a big figure. But the dimensions are alarming: 108 meters in length is 1.5 times more than “Ruslan”.
