The world's first jetpack race was held in Dubai (3 photos + 2 videos)
The UAE has officially proven that flying on jetpacks can become commonplace in the modern world.
Daredevil participants demonstrated their flying skills at the world's first jetpack competition! All participants were professional pilots who had been preparing for this for several weeks.
Against a backdrop of skyscrapers and superyachts, 8 aerial athletes competed in a series of races organized by the Dubai Sports Council and wetsuit makers Gravity Industries.
Athletes covered a distance of one kilometer, maneuvering between 12 giant inflatable obstacles placed on the water.
They used Gravity jetpacks from Gravity Industries, which are equipped with 1,500 horsepower engines and reach speeds of up to 128 km/h. And the most interesting thing is that the same type of fuel was used to refuel the equipment as for Emirates airline aircraft.
To ensure the safety of the jetpack race participants, they were held over the water, close to the Skydive Dubai parachute center. And it turned out to be the right decision: during the flight, at least one person fell into the water at high speed.
Pilot Issa Kalfon, who eventually won the race, admitted that he was nervous before the flight. However, he noted that the jet suit was safe and easy to use.
The device operates on a jet turbine, which is attached to the pilot's backpack. Four more turbines are in human hands.
Gravity plans to hold the championship in Dubai next year, with at least 12 athletes participating. Which will serve as an incentive for the development of jetpacks.
