A ship that disappeared with its crew 120 years ago has been found (5 photos)
The mystery of the ship that disappeared off the coast of Australia has finally been solved. The cargo ship SS Nemesis was transporting coal to Melbourne in July 1904 when it ran into a severe storm and disappeared along with its 32 crew.
A few weeks later, the bodies of the sailors and the wreckage of the ship washed ashore on Cronalla Beach, located 30 km south of Sydney.
However, the wreck of the 73-meter ship was never found.
In 2022, remote sensing company Subsea Professional Marine Services was searching for lost cargo off the coast of Sydney and accidentally stumbled upon the wreck of the SS Nemesis.
The ship rested 25 km from the coast at a depth of 160 m. Its research took more than a year.
The bow and stern were significantly damaged. It was possible to establish the cause of the crash: the engine failed during a storm.
Experts believe that a large wave covered the ship, and it began to sink so quickly that the crew did not have time to lower the lifeboats.
"Forty children lost their fathers on this shipwreck and I hope this discovery will bring peace to the families of the sailors," NSW Minister for Environment and Heritage Penny Sharp said.
Wollongong MP Paul Scully noted that of the more than 200 shipwrecks off the New South Wales coast, only 105 had been recovered.
Members of the missing crew were from Australia, Britain and Canada, officials said.
