The fairy tales we are used to... are somewhat different from the original folk tales. No happy endings for you. Just creepy and bloody black stuff, after which you can’t sleep for several nights. Therefore, in the past they were told to children not so that they would sleep soundly, but so that they would remember for the rest of their lives that walking in the forest at night is the worst possible idea. So it's no wonder that they are an endless source of inspiration for horror fans today. Let's see which horror films were based on fairy tales
Sleepy Hollow (1999)
Tim Burton's detective horror film is based on Washington Irving's short story "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow", which tells the story of the mystical Headless Horseman. The film is full of terrifying fabulousness: starting with the “bad place” and ending with witch rituals.
Suspiria (1977)
A cult horror film that ranks 9th among the 100 best, according to the genre's own figures. The prototype of the main character is Snow White, only she finds herself at the mercy of not just one evil witch, but a whole coven.
Scary Tales (2015)
The film is based on the 17th century collection Tale of Tales. The three main lines are adaptations of the plot of such stories as “The Magic Hind,” “The Flea,” and “The Ragged Old Woman.” The film stars stellar actors: Salma Hayek, Vincent Cassel and John C. Reilly. The film was nominated for the Palme d'Or.
Red Shoes (2005)
South Korean horror film, which is a reimagining of the fairy tale of the same name by Hans Christian Andersen. The life of an ordinary woman, Sung Joon, and her family changes from the moment she finds red shoes on the subway.
Witch Hunters (2012)
The grown-up Hansel and Gretel are obsessed with taking revenge on the evil witches. A film in which Tommy Wirkola proposed his version of the continuation of the Brothers Grimm fairy tale.
November (2017)
The film is based on the novel “November, or the Gumenshchik” by Andrus Kivirähk, which is based on folk tales and legends about the Kratts. This is a modern Estonian fairy tale for adults, which was included in the list of contenders for the Best Foreign Film Oscar.
Return to Oz (1985)
A creepy sequel to 1939's The Wizard of Oz, which begins with Dorothy undergoing electroshock treatment in a mental hospital. This picture was filmed, oddly enough, by the Disney studio.
Bluebeard (2009)
The tale of the same name by Charles Perot, or rather the folk tale he wrote down, became the inspiration for the French thriller about a wife-killer.
Very Bad Boys (2013)
Israeli thriller, which Quentin Tarantino recognized as the best film of 2013. If the real, unsoftened story of "Little Red Riding Hood" is called cruel, then this film turns out to be even crueler. The original title itself, “Big Bad Wolves,” refers to a well-known fairy tale, and the plot is built around the kidnapping of a girl.
Cinderella (2006)
A completely new take on the famous fairy tale is shown in a South Korean horror film. The relationship between mothers and daughters reaches a more painful level here than in the original Cinderella.
Temptation (2015)
Polish musical horror film based on the fairy tale “The Little Mermaid” by Hans Christian Andersen. The film is about mermaid sisters with bloodthirsty tendencies who are doomed to misfortune because of love.
