A Brazilian celebrated the New Year for several days with a bullet in his head (5 photos)
A 21-year-old Brazilian student was having fun on New Year's Eve in Rio de Janeiro when a rock flew into his head. Well, he thought it was a rock. And he did not attach any significance to what had happened, since the bleeding quickly stopped. The problems started later.
Matheus Facio did not suspect that there was a bullet fired by someone in his head. It pierced the skull and lodged in the brain. Over the next few days, he enjoyed himself with friends at parties and swam in the ocean without experiencing any difficulties. But then spasms began in his right hand, and he decided to seek medical help.
Matheus was able to reach doctors only after driving home to Juiz de Fora (320 km), during which he had to stop driving repeatedly due to spasms in his right hand. Because of the shooting pains, the trip took seven hours instead of the usual four and a half.
The truth was revealed on a CT scan. To say that the doctors and the patient were shocked is to say nothing!
The guy underwent a two-hour operation to remove the bullet and spent two days in intensive care. He is now recovering at home in Juiz de Fora, in southern Brazil.
“Part of the bullet penetrated the brain, which caused compression of this area and led to involuntary movements of the arm. If the bullet had hit a few millimeters further, it could have caused much more serious damage and left an arm or one side of the body paralyzed, neurosurgeon Flavio Falcometa said after the operation. “It was very risky for the patient, but we are confident that in 20-30 days he will be able to fully recover.”
The police also got involved in the case. The bullet removed from Mateus' head was examined. An investigation was launched to find out who could have fired the shots.
Matheus Facio told his amazing story on the Brazilian TV show Jornal Nacional.
He was with friends on the beach in Cabo Frio, east of Rio de Janeiro, preparing to ring in the New Year when he was hit in the head.
“I thought it was a rock or something. It was like the sound of a bomb exploding, only inside my head. The bleeding stopped, we left, I took a shower and went to the party,” he recalls.
Waking up on New Year's Day, Facio and his friends returned to the local beach, and on January 2, they set off on the long journey to their hometown of Juiz de Fora in the neighboring state of Minas Gerais. He was hospitalized on Jan. 4, nearly five days after the shooting, after his right arm became “flaccid” and muscle spasms began.
Police took a statement from him after it was determined that the problem was caused by a bullet to the brain. Detectives in Cabo Frio are now trying to determine who fired the gun that may have killed Facio.
“It’s impossible to understand how you can walk for four days with a bullet in your head and survive,” says his mother. “I feel like my son has been born again.”
