Half a ton of drugs found at Istanbul airport (2 photos + 1 video)
In total, the shipment of 568 kilograms of narcotic substances was valued at 68 million Turkish liras.
Istanbul remains one of the largest drug transit centers. Supplies of narcotic substances from South America flock here for further transit to Southeast Asia, and often the detained shipments of “banned” drugs are extremely large.
So, for example, in July 2023, Turkish media reported the seizure of 427 kg of methamphetamine-type drugs “from two air cargo shipments,” and yesterday they discovered an even larger shipment, weighing more than half a ton.
The suspicious transit cargo was examined with the help of sniffer dogs, who found many large packages with unknown contents inside the containers. Laboratory analysis showed that these were narcotic substances.
In a statement, the Commerce Department said: “We will continue to do everything we can to protect our nation, and especially our children and youth, in whom we see our future, from drugs, as we have done so far.
The minimum penalty for drug smuggling in Turkey is 10 years in prison.
