Angus Bain suffered from epileptic seizures for most of his life. The Scot was diagnosed with the disease at the age of five. And at 17, the guy was able to get rid of the manifestations of the disease with the help of a specific treatment method.

Angus was among the first patients in Britain to undergo a new technique to remove part of his brain tissue using a laser.

Nicky Bain, from Gateside, Fife, the boy's mother, said the family's life revolved around her son's illness following his diagnosis:

He was on a lot of very heavy medications, he had wires in his head, brain stimulation, so many tests and scans.

The teenager was admitted to Edinburgh Children's Hospital where he underwent an innovative operation called laser interstitial thermotherapy.

The procedure is minimally invasive and involves minimal tissue trauma. The intervention took place in October last year. The procedure took less than two hours.

Neurosurgeon Jyoti Kandasamy said laser surgery was a fantastic advancement for specific patients and would give some of them a real chance of living a normal life. The intervention will change for the better the life of not only Angus himself, but also the guy’s entire family.

Bain is the second person from Scotland to undergo such surgery. He dreams that one day he will be able to catch up with his peers in terms of activity, get a driver's license, start playing rugby and learn to ski. Before the operation, such activities posed too great a risk to health, so they were completely excluded.

It’s too early to talk about sports, but since the operation Bane has not had a single attack, although before that they happened at least once a week. This patient's real prospects for the future have become an inspiring example for other patients whose lives are complicated by epilepsy.
