- Ukraine does not need its entire territory to defeat Putin, says the NYT.
The end of the conflict in Ukraine with a truce of the parties will leave approximately a fifth of Ukrainian territory under the control of Vladimir Putin.
OdHowever, Ukraine does not need all its territories to win: for Kyiv, victory will be the emergence from the hell of war as a strong, independent, prosperous and secure state, firmly connected with the West.
Those people who resist continued aid to Ukraine, be it some Republicans in Congress or Viktor Orban in Hungary, cannot be allowed to abandon the Ukrainians now. And stopping the fight does not mean Putin’s victory, no matter how loudly he declares it.
Ukraine and most of the world will not accept his annexation of any Ukrainian territory. The Russian army is already humiliated, and its economy is cut off from the West.
The conflict can still take an unexpected turn, as it has happened before. But at this stage, the prospect is a long war of attrition that will further damage Ukraine, sacrifice more lives and spread instability across Europe.

- Sentenced to 24 years in prison, the Tulun maniac from Russia died in the war
Fifty-five-year-old Pavel Shuvalov, better known as the Tulun maniac, who entered into a contract with one of the private military companies (PMCs), died in the war. Several sources in law enforcement agencies reported this to Lenta.ru on Thursday, December 28.
According to sources, Shuvalov signed a contract with the PMC in April of this year. After training, the man was sent to the line of combat contact near Lugansk, where he died on May 29. His death was confirmed by three fellow soldiers, who also noted that Shuvalov’s body could not be recovered.
According to the investigation, from 1991 to 2019, Shuvalov raped at least 27 women, killing two of them. However, due to the Tulun flood that occurred in 2019, in which some of the archival materials were damaged, in court it was possible to prove Shuvalov’s involvement in only two rapes and the same number of murders.
