Mexican jumping beans

Mexican jumping beans are pods of the Sebastiania pavoniana plant that are infested with the caterpillar larvae of the leaf moth Cydia deshaisiana. It is these caterpillars, living inside the parts of the boxes, that make them move or “jump”.

Jumping beans can be found in an area of approximately 50 by 150 kilometers where the bush grows. When the temperature rises, for example, if a bean with a caterpillar is picked up in your hand, the larva inside will begin to move, pulling the threads, which causes the bean to roll or jump.

Mexican jumping beans are a popular children's toy in Mexico. They are also used in some traditional rituals and ceremonies.
