Losing loved ones is always difficult. And people use all possible methods to somehow cope with grief. A young British woman, Matilda Handy, proposed an unusual idea that resonated with authorities and citizens.
Matilda’s grandparents passed away a few years ago. She herself was still too small, but she was worried and worried about her mother. And the girl came up with an interesting idea about how to express grief and turn despair into bright sadness and faith.
She wanted to send letters and cards to her deceased relatives. And she told about her mother’s desire. According to My Modern Met, Lynn Handy supported her daughter's idea and approached the management of Gedling Crematorium in Lumbly (Nottingham), where she works, asking for help.
The administration cooperated and installed an old mailbox near the building, pre-painted, decorated and decorated with the inscription “Letters to Heaven.” Since it was installed last Christmas, people have posted about a hundred messages there.
9-year-old Matilda was prompted to develop a plan by her grandmother’s work - she worked at the post office and devoted a quarter of a century to this work. From an early age, Matilda visited her grandmother at work, saw what she did, and understood the importance of such work. The idea resonated with British authorities when a touching tribute to the girl proved so popular among other mourners.
With the support of the Westerleigh Group (owner of Gedling), there are plans to install the boxes in other crematoria across the country. In total, these are 40 objects, but the idea was supported in other countries, for example, in Australia. Nostalgia also plays an important role, as in the digital age people miss the good old days of sending Christmas cards to loved ones. On anniversaries and holidays, boxes are filled more than usual.
Matilda hopes that heavenly mail will help other people cope with grief:
We do this so that people can use them as they pass by. It was hard because my grandfather passed away in November 2022, so that definitely helped me. It's just a really nice way to express my feelings and send them a letter and tell them how much I love them.
Matilda Handy received the Order of the Knights of Honor for her idea in October. Not long ago, a girl approached King Charles III with a request to install a white and gold mailbox near Buckingham Palace to provide everyone with the opportunity to write a letter to the late royals.
