In the UK, bomb disposal experts defused a bomb that had been a garden decoration for decades. The owners of the site believed that they were dealing with a dummy.

British pensioners have learned that a bomb decorating their garden is dangerous.

Residents of Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire, lived for 41 years with an unexploded 19th-century bomb in their garden. Geoffrey Edwards, 77, and his wife Sian used the ammunition as a decorative element and even painted it the same color as the window frames.

When they moved into the house in 1982, the ship's bomb was already there; Moreover, the previous owners told the man that it had lain in this place for more than a century. According to the recollections of Edwards himself, who lived on the same street almost all his life, as children they played next to the bomb, poked it with sticks and threw stones. Both he and the others believed that the bomb that served as their toy was simply a dummy that was used during training before the First World War.

However, it turned out that it still contained a combat charge. After learning about the bomb, the police came to the Edwards on November 29 and warned that the Ministry of Defense would have to inspect the munition. The Edwards were also warned that a bomb squad would arrive and the street might be evacuated due to the threat of an explosion.

“We didn’t sleep a wink that night. We lived in this house for 41 years, watched the bomb all these years, and I told the sappers: “If you evacuate the street, my wife and I will not go anywhere - we will stay here,” the pensioner told reporters. The reason for this decision for the Edwards was the fear of losing their home and all their property. “We will leave this world with our home and everything in it,” Jeffrey Edwards told the military.

To the man’s delight, the sappers came to the conclusion that the ammunition charge was insignificant and could be moved without the need to evacuate residents. The bomb was transported to an abandoned quarry and detonated in a controlled manner. It broke into two pieces, and further analysis confirmed that the bomb was carried by a British warship between 1880 and 1890.
