According to People, a 34-year-old man was admitted to a Chicago medical center with pneumonia in May. The pathogen turned out to be resistant to antibiotics, and the main organ of the respiratory system was literally working on its last legs, since it was completely filled with purulent contents.

But donor transplantation was contraindicated due to an infection that first had to be eliminated. And to do this, both lungs would have to be removed. There was no such experience in the practice of surgeons at a medical organization. But the patient had no chance; he was practically doomed.
And the doctors decided to take a risk, realizing that the patient would have no other options. Ankit Bharat, who heads the department of thoracic surgery, realized they needed a creative solution. Because after the removal of the patient’s lungs, it was necessary to connect him to artificial ones, and for this period something should be placed in the chest cavity that would hold the heart in the correct position and prevent it from stopping. 
The team considered breast implants to be the best option. The operation was not an easy one. First, all the blood was pumped out of the body. Then the heart was securely fixed using silicone prostheses, blood flow was restored and Davey was connected to artificial lungs. This device is a prosthesis for people whose breathing is difficult or impaired.

The patient's condition improved so quickly that a couple of days after the intervention he was put on the transplant list. The man was also lucky in that a suitable donor organ was found very soon.

After completing rehabilitation, Bauer can already perform simple tasks at home and walk on the street. Doctors are still providing supportive therapy, but Davey, given a second chance, has the opportunity to return to normal life.
