Tuning an old Suburban for $1,100,000 (14 photos + 1 video)
Tuning shop Icon turned an old 1970 Chevrolet Suburban into a 1,000-horsepower restomod. The project cost the customer $1.1 million.
Icon founder and CEO Jonathan Ward admitted that the Suburban has always been one of his favorite models. The inspiration was the work of the German architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, who worked extensively with steel and glass.
The stock engine was replaced with a twin-supercharged Alien LS 427 from Nelson Racing Engines. Its output reaches 1014 hp. and 1220 Nm. The creators of the car assure that the result is not a purely racing unit: it works calmly in a traffic jam with the air conditioning on.
The SUV was equipped with a 4L85-E automatic transmission with overdrive, fully independent suspension and powerful Brembo disc brakes on all wheels.
The radiator grille is cut from a single piece of metal. The driver's door handle is engraved with the initials of one of the customer's family members who worked at the GM plant when this Suburban was produced. The interior was completely made from scratch.
The modernization went so far that Icon seriously redesigned the body. In the original, the SUV had only one rear door, so that children could only exit the car from the sidewalk. At the request of the client, the studio specialists made another door on the left side.
