Nirmal and Kaur got married in 1963. The couple had three children, but in 1996 the man asked the court to divorce them. 
Nirmal Panesar and Kaur got married back in 1963. At first everything was fine, but in 1983 the couple separated and stopped living together. In 1996, Nirmal approached the district court for divorce. But Kaur did not intend to get a divorce; she stated that she was trying with all her might to maintain the relationship and still wanted to take care of her husband. The district court refused to grant Nirmal a divorce, and he approached the Supreme Court of India. Having been refused, Nirmal has been filing for divorce for 27 years and getting rejected.
During the last hearing, the court ruled that the couple's marriage was "unsalvageable" but that was not enough for a divorce, NDTV reported.
“In our opinion, we should not forget that the institution of marriage occupies an important place and plays an important role in society,” the court said.
The decision said allowing the divorce petition would be an "injustice" to Paramjeet, who told the court she did not want to die with the "stigma" of a divorcee. 
In India, divorce remains taboo. Only one out of 100 marriages ends in dissolution, and then only with the help of family pressure and the law. In India, a marriage can be dissolved only due to cruelty, violence or unjustified financial demands.
