Three-wheeled “plane” for pizza delivery will be put up for auction (3 photos)
In early November, a lot called Tritan A2 Aerocar will be offered at the American Mecum auction. It is one of 10 cars built in the mid-1980s as a joint project between Tritan Ventures and the Domino's pizza chain.
Aerocar developers planned to build a lightweight and economical vehicle. This explains both the original design, which ensured a drag coefficient of 0.15, and the choice of motor. The Aerocar was powered by a Syvaro rotary engine with a volume of 440 cubic centimeters and 30 hp, consuming less than 3 liters of fuel per 100 km.
The Domino's pizza chain planned to build its own fleet of pizza delivery vehicles in the mid-1980s. Due to the unusual aero design, they were supposed to serve as additional advertising for the brand. Another feature was a two-seater “cockpit”, which had to be entered by sliding the windshield forward.
At the initiative of the head of the Aerocar network, instead of a passenger seat, they were equipped with a pizza oven so that the food would not cool down during delivery, and they were painted in corporate colors. It was assumed that Domino's would purchase 180 of these cars, but only 10 units were built, and only 7, according to some sources, have survived to this day.
The copy offered for sale is one of two in private hands. The car comes with a trailer for transporting it, but it no longer has a pizza oven.
