Environmental activists poured red paint on a Picasso painting in Lisbon

17 October 2023

Environmental activists from the organization Climaximo poured red paint on Pablo Picasso’s 1929 painting “Woman in a Chair (Metamorphosis)”, located in the Museum of Modern Art in Lisbon

The protesters smeared paint on the canvas, then sat on the floor and glued their hands to the wall. They were detained by law enforcement officers. The painting was under glass, so it was not damaged.

The activists explained their action by saying that the authorities and corporations had declared war on the entire population of the Earth, and art could not exist on a planet devoid of life. The organization clarified that they chose Picasso’s painting because of his famous phrase.

“When German soldiers entered Picasso’s studio in Paris, where he lived during World War II, and saw Guernica, a famous painting about the horrors of war, he was asked: “Did you do this?” He replied: “No, you did it,” clarified Climaximo.
